Last week Amazon opened up the far field voice control feature on the Fire TV here in the UK, letting Echo owners control their Amazon-made streaming stick using nothing but voice commands. To commemorate that, and clearly get people ditching the voice button on the remote, Amazon’s bundling the two devices together.
As of today you can buy a Fire TV Stick with an Echo Dot for the low price of £69.98. Ok so it’s not that low, but it does save you £20 compared to buying them both separately. Assuming, of course, you’re a chump who’s willing to pay full price for the Echo Dot and not wait for the next inevitable discount. But even if you take into account the many, many Echo Dot discounts you’re still saving yourself a bit of money. Only £5, but that’s better than nothing.
As you probably gathered, far field voice control lets you ignore the Alexa button on the Fire TV’s remote – letting you use your voice to properly bark commands at your television. For single Fire TV owners, pairing is simple and automatic. All you need to do is ask Alexa to control what’s happening on the dongle, and she’ll be able to get it done without issue. Assuming, of course, that they’re both on the same network.
If you have more than one Fire TV, things get a bit trickier. But thankfully not by much:
- Go to the menu and select Music, Video, & Books.
- Select Fire TV.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Select Link Devices to confirm your selection.
And then you’ll be able to control your paired Stick. Easy.
Amazon didn’t specify how long the bundle will be available, only that it would be a limited time offer. So if you’re interested in saving yourself £20/£5 you better get ordering pronto.
